Is Breakfast Really the Most Important Meal of the Day?

Do you remember being a kid and hearing that breakfast is the most important meal of the day? The more I think about it, the more I feel like it was a particularly popular marketing strategy for cereal brands in the early 2000's. Anyone else or am I making that up?

Regardless of where this idea came from, let's dive in!

Is one meal actually more important than the rest?

Before becoming a Registered Dietitian, the phrase "breakfast is the most important meal of the day" had me thinking that this is the meal that should be the 'healthiest'. Whatever that means!

Is there a meal that you should prioritize more than others? Nope! I'd much rather hear that you are eating enough, and roughly every 2-4 hours, rather than putting emphasis on making one meal perfect.

Is there some truth behind the phrase?

Every client I work with is unique with their own goals, challenges, food preferences, and lifestyle. And yet one of the most common threads between the majority of people I work with, is that small tweaks to their breakfast routine can have big impacts on how they feel.

Breakfast, as the name implies, is how we 'break our fast' from the night. Ideally, that's at least 8 hours of not eating while you are asleep, maybe more depending on the last time you ate before bed.

Eating a balanced breakfast in the morning fuels your body with energy for the day and plays a role in regulating your blood sugar (a topic for another day!).

Skipping breakfast is like starting the day with a low phone battery. Yes you can get through the day, but you're going to spend the whole day playing catch up, trying to find a charger and an outlet to keep your phone from shutting down.

When you start your day on an empty stomach, your body spends the rest of the day playing catch up, as it's using energy while it's already in low power mode.

If you're struggling with an afternoon energy slump, it might be time to take a look at your breakfast!

Low energy, brain fog, taking a while to 'wake up' in the morning, relying on caffeine to get through the afternoon, feeling ravenous or out of control around food in the evening. These are all common concerns I hear from my clients who skip breakfast.

Might there be other problems that need to be addressed? Yes. But if there's a chance that you could make some tweaks to your morning routine that leave you feeling better the rest of the day, it's a great place to start!

While I wouldn't say breakfast is the most important meal of the day in that it needs to be a perfect meal, there is some truth behind the phrase, as what you eat for breakfast can make or break how you feel the rest of the day!

And no, coffee is not breakfast! 😉
